INTRO: I admit it, I ocassionally play BGH..but not because I am terrible at the game, but because I am working on better coordination with my teammate, without worrying too much about minerals, nor the map. Besides, it's fun. But don't get me wrong, I criticize those that exclusively play Hunters/BGH because you don't have to expand, and you don't have to scout the map, and you can just choke up and tech up. But anyway, my point is that after playing my usual intense 1v1 (not BGH), and not feeling like playing team BGH to "cruise and just relax", I decided to try something new.

I set up a public game in Hunters map, but this time, a one on one. Now you will probably think, what's the point? I don't want to hear about another Hunter/BGH game. Well, there are some lessons that can be learned.

EARLY GAME:

I chose random and ended up with Terran at 8:00 position. I think my opponent went Random as well. I go with my Supply Depot build on my 8th SCV, and then went Barracks then... Refinery. I wanted to try a new tactic I was thinking of...very risky, but I wanted to have fun.

Well, when I could spare (around the 13th SCV), I sent one out to scout and send him to check 6:00 and then 4:00 positions. I found him at 4:00 and see that he is Toss, with 2 Gateways built (that's all I saw as my SCV was destroyed by Zealot and a probe). I wasn't Micro'ing him very well.

Anyway, I was thinking, ok..he's going mass units, zealots, dragoons or both.

I put up a bunker at my choke and started to make a factory, then another one as my scouting SCV died. I knew I didn't have much time.

FIRST ATTACK:

He sent 3 zealots at my bunker, then decided to walk past them and go for my production. I didn't set up a bunker there yet so I had to pull out my marines and chase the Z's.

He split up his Zealots: 1 to attack the SCVs and the other 2 to take my marines out. That was a good tactic coz my marines were no match..I had to keep making them while he kept sending 1 or two Z's to replace the ones I killed. I'd do a shoot, run back to the bunker routine, etc. Meanwhile, the lone zealot was tearing up my SCVs.

My factory had been done and I decided to just screw it and made another factory. The first factory I queued up some vultures. As soon as one got produced I immediately sent it to help out the marines.

It was generally more Z's and less SCVs for me, while I kept making marines/vultures.

THE TURN AROUND:

He probably thought he had it, the same way "zerg Ling rushers" keep up with making waves and waves of zerglings. All I saw was more and more Z's. But even though I had lost a lot of SCVs (I still kept making them), the combo of vultures and marines vs. 2-3 Z's was beginning to be effective. Actually, at one point, I only had 1 vulture vs. his two Z's, and so he chased my vulture but I would speed away, then shoot, then speed away, until my marines and vultures showed up.

Eventually the tide turned in my favor. As soon as I had about 6 vultures, I sent them all out to his base. I stopped making marines, really, and concentrated on vultures (I didn't care I was having fun).

Now as I quickly got to his base, I found he had 2 zealots so I split my vulture into two groups, 3 to engage the zealots and 3 to go to his production. I see that he was already making a forge.

Well, I also set up the Rally Point of my Factories to just outside his base, and queued up more Vultures.

Eventually, I was winning this war...he tried to make a cannon, but I immediately focused on it.

MOPPING UP:

He said "good game", but really didn't leave. He just stayed. If you ever see 12 vultures try to lay waste on a buildings, it is a SLOW process. Vultures are great against Zealots, and perhaps individual units (I really don't know the statistics of their damage to units).

I attached the machine shop thingee to the factory and then researched Vulture Boosters. I sent out the new vultures to patrol the map, looking for expansions. I also made marines to help finish off his base (these darn vultures take FOREVER against buildings).

LESSONS LEARNED:

-use your units strengths. vultures are fast, so I kept running away from his zealots while still getting shots at him.

-don't just keep rushing with zealots, tech up also in the meantime. I still kept making factory while I was in critical condition at production and marine count. Eventually, I was able to help out with my vultures.

-build a bunker next to your production. I usually do this, but he attacked very early as soon as he found me.

-cannons for Toss works well as Defense, so if you are on the offensive, don't let him build it. As soon as I saw one warping in, I focused on it, I knew they would make the difference for his defense. If you are Toss playing D, put them up as soon as you know you may be in danger. Just because the battle was at my front, he really didn't make defense until I took it to him.

-Try new things out. I normally wouldn't do things like this, but I felt like experimenting. It is very risky to just use a very little used unit like Vultures...very specific for ground small units. If he
went air, or more goons, I'd be dead.

-Just have fun. Yes, I played this game on Hunters, but that really didn't have an effect on how the game developed...the only thing was I knew the map. The game was pretty short, and he attacked early and I countered early also, not going for the late game.

-Girls can play Starcraft too =)
