It was about 9:30 in the evening and I was really pissed off because I was killing a "cannon-happy" protoss and he had double disced on me. That really sucked. That pulled down my rating even further down from a 998 to a 974. Pretty disgusting, huh?
So this time I specifically named the game "1v1 980+ no disc." This is probably a good idea since the "no disc" may give people a guilty conscience and change their minds about disconnecting. hehe. Anyway, someone joined pretty quick and had a rating of about 976. Now my main race is Protoss, and as a Protoss, I HATE playing against a Zerg. So when the guy came in, my choice of race is already chosen as Zerg. I think this would discourage anyone else from using those buggers and I would have a P v P game or P v T game. Most people don't like Z v Z, except Koreans of course^^ They really excel at that matchup.
So he said go, I clicked OK, we exchanged "gl," and we both changed to Protoss at the last second. I started off with pylon, gate, gas, then another gate. From most of my P v P experiences, this matchup is almost always a goon/reaver battle, so I limited my number of zealots to 3, covering the ramp. I scouted after my gas started warping. I got to his base by the time it completed and I saw he had no gas and about 6 zealots. My Barry Sanders probe somehow made it into his base to find two gates and 3 pylons. Unfortunately my football star probe was killed quickly after.
I thought I had a good chance of winning since I started my gas earlier than he did, then I followed up with a cybernetics core. I also built another gateway after this to pump those goons even faster. I built 5 goons before starting a robotics, followed by another robotics. I scouted again to find that he had a very good number of goons.
Finally, my robotics facilities were done, and I started the most vital unit in conjunction with the reaver, the shuttle. I had just enough minerals to start a robotics bay, and warped that in as well. I decided to take a chance and wanted to drop the reavers without sending in an observer first. I wanted to distract him first by sending in my MASSIVE number of zealots, 3, on a suicide mission. When I got to his natural I saw that he finished his nexus, and had one robotics and a bay there at his natural (?).
So I sent my zealots hitting the robotics facility, that was out of the range of the goons placed on the ramp. This forces them to run down, buying me MUCHO time to drop those snails of destruction. I was thinking maybe he didn't hear "We are under attack" from his computer speakers because I took out ALL his probes. Yum. You know how it feels when you do it -=]. Then I started hitting a few pylons for the heck of it and ran back into my shuttle as soon as I saw a dragoon running at me. I thought maybe he still had a lot of minerals because of his natural expansion.
At this time I thought I would have to drop on his natural and take out the probes there. So I sent my shuttles on it's way when I saw about 12-18 dragoons running towards my ramp. I thought game over, and was about to leave. However, I dropped my shuttle behind my goons as fast as I could to save myself. Ramps were my friend that game. As long as my ramp was plugged up good to protect my reavers I knew I was fine. During this whole attack I built 3 more goons from my gates, and two more reavers. I had ONE LAST dragoon covering my ramp, about to die, when the three fresh dragoons came to use their fat selves to clog the ramp again. So altogether, 2 reavers took out about TWELVE dragoons while I had only 7-8 at the top of my ramp. He ran his remaining dragoons, about 6, from my destructive reavers, placed nicely behind 4 fat dragoons.
I thought his reserve of goons was depleted at his base, so I commenced with the reaver drop on his natural. Luckily he also had little defense at his natural. After the last probe at his expansion was gone, he left the game... without discing, nice huh?
I knew it was safe to click on "continue playing" (lol) knowing that I won the game. I scouted out his main seeing 2 gates, a forge, a good number of probes, and 2 dragoons protecting the edge of the base (I guess he thought I was gonna drop his main again from the south).
Lessons Learned:
1. Reavers are your friend. Placed behind some goons on a ramp, they will take out ANYTHING that tries to get into your base. Err... except tanks :o(
2. When playing Protoss vs. Protoss, get gas a.s.a.p. and lower the amount of zealots you have. However, they do serve as a good wall when fighting.
3. Also when playing Protoss vs. Protoss, sometimes the only option is teching to reavers. Templars will probably not kill off goons as well as reavers, and of course going for scouts or carriers are absurd.
4. When going for a drop, make sure to protect your own base from a drop. I think I could've been easily dropped the whole game.
5. Stupidly, I didn't try to expand to the islands. I could've expanded to BOTH islands without being harmed.

P.S. I'm a newbie report writer! :o( |
