Cast leaped up at the sound of her name. She looked around the pitch black room. Frightened, the little Terran girl slowly sneaked out bed and headed for Alfaries’ sleeping quarters. She never experienced what her protector called “dreams” before. Alfarie told her they were like real life but what happened inside them had no actual outcome in the real world. Castallas once had read a program about them before, and some Protoss believe dreams sometimes may predict the future. How do you know if it’s a dream? Am I dreaming right now? Shuddering at what her own imagination could do to her, she questioned herself. Some of the traits like hesitation and self-doubt which Alfarie warned would destroy even the mightiest Templar, her own brain fed to her everyday! Castallas silently crept towards her protector’s room, attempting not to be seen or heard until she reached her destination. The girl, so caught up in her own thoughts, walked right into Alfaries’ room without announcing her presence. She quickly slid to
Alfaries’ bedside and patiently waited for her protector to awaken.
Time wore on, but Alfarie never stirred a inch. Getting upset by her protector’s lack of consciousness, Cast climbed into the bed. After a second of searching, she noticed Alfarie wasn’t even there! Cast reached out to Alfarie with her mind, but it did no good. Alfarie said she was too young to talk with her head yet. Cast ran back to her room
and grabbed her nearest set of clothes. She wore her sun-blond hair in a topknot like the other girls her age
did; her 5 year old body raced out of the house in search of Alfarie.
The City was beautiful, great towers of Silversteel reached for the azure sky, pylons lit each street corner with their pearly light. The protector’s home was right by a Citadel of Adun, a place to worship the gods and learn about the Kalia. Cast made her way down the avenue while thinking of possible places Alfarie may be. One came to her
mind instantly, the Jemix. She headed to the Jemix, the conclave’s building. Cast had no idea what happened in there. She did know however that Alfarie spent most of her time there. She made her way there by the time Tritios, Aiurs moon, was in the center of the night sky. She stopped in front of the majestic building. Breathing in the wonderful scent of Aiur, a small Bengalaas was curled up around a pylon, basking in its radiance. She was tempted to pet the gorgeous creature but decided it would be a more efficient use of time to find Alfarie. She activated the lift to raise her to the gates.
As soon as the lift brought her to the ivory doors, she entered, heading for the main floor, wondering why the Protoss made it like a diamond, big in the middle floors but small in the bottom and top ones. Only through supreme manipulation of gravity was the conclave capable of this. All of Jemix was completely suspended by artificial gravity. She walked through the hallway which was covered in decorations, old swords, war banners and paintings. At the end of the hallway were a pair of spiraling staircases blanketed in crystal shards engraved with symbols. They also were the only way to traverse in the Jemix. Castallas took the left staircase and headed upwards to where she prayed
Alfarie would be. Thinking back on the voice that had said her name, she continued to climb what appeared to be thousands of steps. By the time she reached the top, Tritios was nearing time to set. Cast stepped into a small room, it was probley used as a office for someone. She looked in and
saw Alfarie talking to a much older protoss--maybe he was even a high templar!
“What I don’t understand, Alfarie, is how she survived the Zerg attack,” the older Protoss was saying. He was wearing full battle armor and no weapon. Cast thought to
herself why he was unarmed when she remembered Alfarie saying that they leave the path of physical violence to a bring there psionic powers to new heights.
“They were a dozen or so Zerg bodies around her, sir. I believe the medical facility was the last area the Zerg hit, so most of them were dead or very injured and possibly some
sort of defense system killed them off,” Alfarie spoke tiredly. Cast switched the position her legs so she could get more comfortable.
“Maybe, Alfarie. I still think some great power protected her.” The elder protoss leaned back in his chair, contemplating who or what saved Castallas from the swarm.
“She has stronger Psionic powers then any of the children that look her age,” Alfarie retorted.
“How old is she our years?” inquired The High Templar.
“Nearing her late Seventies,” replayed Alfarie sluggishly, the late hour having some effect on her motor skills.
“Oh my great conclave, they mature fast-- safe to assume they die fast also?”
“I would guess her life span is 80 terran years or so.” Alfarie was virtually falling asleep trying to focus on the Templar.
“Hm....You must continue to train her in our ways, Make sure she gets the right attention she needs. Is she able to project mental thoughts yet?” asked the ancient Protoss.
“No, only her feelings, Her people speak through mouths I believe, but I will continue to teach her to talk through her mind be assured. She is a quick study.” Alfarie started getting ready to go.
“These Terrans seem to adapt very quickly. Make sure no harm comes to young Castallas; her life is in your hands, Alfarie,” The old Protoss turned in his chair and looked
out the massive window at Tritios, his way of telling her the conversation was over. Alfarie started heading down the stairs.
Scared that this meeting was about her, Castallas took the left staircase again, racing down it to beat Alfarie home. She had to get home before Alfarie or she would punish her. Cast made her way through the Jemix as fast as she could, running the lift to get down to Aiur. After exiting the lift Cast ran back to there house in such a haste she woke up the Bengalaas by the pylon, who snipped lazily at her feet.
At the house, Cast ran to her room and pretended to sleep. Minutes after Cast’s body hit the mattress, Alfarie entered the house and marched to Casts room. She caressed Cast’s face lovingly and spoke.
“Sweet dreams, my little Castallas.”
