"I have to admit I don't know a whole lot about this guy, cept that I obsed a few games with him, in which he's been suspiciously quiet. He seems to be very gm - perhaps a little overly so - and actually destroyed his scvs, floating his CC away over the nearest sea. Meanwhile I opted to scv dance round the closest geyser." -|]agomar

As it is, there'll be no pics (or for that matter anything else) in this br - just plain text.
Right.
The game was my fourth ladder game ever. I joined a game named "1000 and below" with my 982-or-thereabouts rating. Waiting in the channel was Dark_Warrior. We exchanged a few pleasantries as I looked up his record. Ninety-odd wins, forty-five or so losses, and twenty-five disconnects. No ladder record, but still pretty intimidating stats to someone of my level. I gulped and asked if he was ready. He started the countdown and picked Protoss. Wait a minute....Dark_Warrior picking Protoss? I was sure I'd see some DT - or rather, I wouldn't. I'd be dead too fast. I selected my usual Terran.
The game started on Lost Temple (luckily for me, I really have to remember to look at the map before I get screwed one day) with myself at the 6 o'clock and Dark at the 12. I breathed in deeply as I set my SCV's a-mining, repeating to myself the mantra I learned on this very site: "Do not fear DTs. Cure them." I decided to go by-the-book Heavy Metal, and built my first depot at 8. As soon as it was finished, I started my barracks (about 10 or 11 supply). While my rax was going up, I put up a refinery while continuously pumping SCVs. Then I noticed a probe sitting near the edge of the fog of war in the middle of my plateau.
?
Just as I notice the little bugger, he moves to attack the SCV building the rax. The probe gets in one or two shots before the rax is done and my SCV starts returning the favor. The probe promptly dies, and my injured-but-far-from-dead SCV starts working on another depot to complete the wallin. I build two marines out of the rax and keep pumping SCVs.
Now, a bit of personal history. I have never been able to execute a wallin correctly. There's always some gap or hole. But this time I carefully studied the pic in Heartcutter's Heavy Metal guide, and emulated it to the best of my ability. Eventually, a lone zealot came traipsing up to the wallin as my factories were building. He began whacking on one of the depots, and I moved my marines into firing position. The zealot was being tooled on, and then he started meandering around, trying to get through the wallin. "I'll be damned," I muttered to myself as I queued up another marine. Dark said "good...cheesy" and the zealot walked off.
As my second factory was finishing up, I comsatted his main to see a templar archives just warping in. If Dark was DT, then he was slow. At least I had that going for me. Finally, my first vulture popped out. Time for work. I lifted off the barracks and floated it over by my factories as I ordered up an academy and two more depots. Then I sent out the vulture (we'll call him "Freon" - a lot like Deon, but cooler and poisonous). He zipped over to the 3, then headed for the 12.
"We are under attack." "?!"
At the natural choke, Freon ran into a gateway, a few zeals, and two cannons. I wasn't expecting this and Freon died before I could redirect him away. By this time I had four more vultures and was mining my ramp, along the cliff next to my natural (whoops - need to learn the map a bit better), and placed three mines just a bit in front of my natural. Curing the darkness. My remaining vults scouted the 9 o'clock, then settled down east of the temple's edifice, where they caught a fugitive probe setting up a pylon outside of 3's natural. The probe died fast, and the vultures went to work on the forming pylon. However, they didn't work fast enough, so I sent in the six tanks I had moved behind them. Pylon wasted, my attack force moved towards his area.
Nobody told me that siege tanks have to be sieged to be effective against goons! My 4-vult 6-tank force die to 4 or 5 zealots and 7 or 8 dragoons. I grumble and order up more tanks. I scan him a few more times and see a shiny new robotics facility in his main, a few goons at his choke with the two cannons and gateway. At this point, Dark asks me to stop scanning. I oblige him and continue building up and clustering tanks at my natural, where I've set up an expansion.
All of a sudden I get a really bad feeling. I clustered my tanks just north of my CC and sieged them. Sure enough, here come the goons. 7 or 8 arclite cannons make mincemeat out of the first few that approach, but they're coming too fast...
The three mines! They pop up, and two or three dragoons at a time stop to shoot at them, giving the tanks time to waste them. I kill a fair number of dragoons unscathed, then the rest move in and prove no match for my tanks. I hear the sound of templar death - whether high or dark I couldn't tell. I unsiege my tanks and start moving them forward...right into a waiting HT.
DOH!
To make it short, the temp gets off one storm which wounds my tanks, but then he eats level 1 tank shells and dies. I move my tanks towards Dark's natural choke as I load two up into a dropship. The turbo newbie lands just before I siege up the tanks to pound on his front door. I move my turbo newbie in and send my dropship back for more tanks. He calls gg but stays in the game, pumping zealots to attack my tanks. But the tanks steamroll him, and as they come up his ramp his probes come out in a conga line of death. Eventually, I siege up and blast his nexus, he leaves with a "gg" and a "byebye."
Lessons learned:
-Don't forget to hotkey your comsat. General advice, because I almost forgot to do it.
-Wallins work, much to my surprise.
-I got lucky in facing a very old-school Protoss player. No DTs and a fairly slow techer (he had 2 forges at his natural choke). Dark played a good game, though.
-Two-pronged attacks kick ass. Knock on the front door with the big guns and turbo newbie at the same time.
-Learn from those who are more experienced - for that purpose, this site rocks. "Don't just read the book of Heartcutter, practice it."
Retrospective:
-I should've placed my mines a bit better. I might've been able to take the entire goon assault unscathed.
-On the subject of mines, I should've "poisoned" each base and its natural with a single mine.
-I tended to leave my factories idle while making assaults. I have to work on that a bit.
-Battle reports take a long time to write.
I hope y'all enjoyed my first attempt.
