SHOWDOWN: Part 1

The twin suns peaked over the horizon and heated the dusty desert cliffs. The small terran outpost came to life in the morning light. SCV workers set to gathering precious minerals as marines manned their posts. Every soldier and worker sweated from the heat and the anticipation of a zerg attack. A scout reported the arrival of a zerg brood, about two miles from their location. The transmission ended abruptly and everyone assumed the worst. A zerg brood was bad news for any terran outpost, especially one with only a barracks and one bunker to protect it.

Four marines looked out from the steel shell that stood as the last and only line of defense for their small base. The veteran of the defenders quietly enjoyed a smoke as the other three rookies paced back and forth in the cramped bunker. They walked and paced nervously around the bunker until the veteran could barley take it anymore. “Jesus Christ, will you three settle down. Man can hardly enjoy a smoke with you three pacing idiots!” “well shit sarge. I kinda get nervous when those damn zergies are waiting for us.” “Yeah! How we suppose to know if somethin’s comin’ if we ain’t lookin’ out the windows?” “Trust me boys. When the zergies come you’ll know. The ground starts shaken and the sky turns black without a cloud in the sky. You look out and BAM! Ten, twenty of the sons of bitches are comin right at you.Gausse fire bounces right off ‘em. They start to slash and spit and soon they break through the walls. The only thing between you and them is your rifle and the sonovabitch in front of you.” “Hey sarge?” “Yeah?” “What’s them little things the zergy got?” “What? You mean zerglings?” “Yeah. What do they look like?” “Well. There bout the size of a dog. Big claws, big teeth and they smell like shit. Why?” “Cause six of those mother fuckers are headed our way!” “Dammit to Hell! Why didn’t you say so?! Move and let me see!” Sure enough six lings were converging fast. The sarge picked up the teleline and called HQ. “This is Sergeant Hood at the bunker. We’re gonna need a repair crew down here fast, zergies are comin.” “Roger that sergeant. Dispatching SCV’s to your position.” The sarge hung up the phone and grabbed his rifle. “Lock and load boys! On my mark fire at will! Ready?! Pour it on!” The rifles unloaded a fury of metal spikes into the pack of lings. Two dropped from gausse fire but the other four charged ahead. The lings crashed into the bunker and began to slash away at the steel. Even with rifle fire raining upon themthe lings cut deep into the structure. In the end guasse fire prevailed and the lings slumped bloody and dead on the stainless steel. The four marines toasted their victory with a beer or two as the SCV’s repaired the damage and hosed off the blood and entrails off the steps.
