Prepregame-
Having missed my city's bus to go to my program, I decided to play some
broodwar. After booting up my comp I just opened and closed my cd-rom,
knowing the bw cd would be in from the night before. After logging on I
quickly joined the nh channel. After playing a couple games, I decided to
try and find a br. After 2 hours, I finally found 2 admirable people to
play, Drefsab and Frost!^^. The map was to be the infamous Lost Temple.
Both players randomed, and without further ado, I submit to you, my feature
presentation.
Pregame-
Frost!^^ spawned up as purple zerg at 12 while
Defsab warped in as red protoss at 3. Immediately they both sent their 4
starting peons to work,
but their build order's went way different now, probably having something
to do with the fact that they are two different races.
Frost!^^ went something like: sent his overlord
to scout towards 3, after
8th drone overlord, drone, 11 drones hatch at ramp, pool, gas, then one
sunken colony on his cliff in the corner, to his eventual tech of hydras.
Meanwhile Drefsab has also been busy, his bo went
a little like: 8 pylon
then sends the probe that made the pylon to scout towards the 12 base,
11th probe or so gate, another probe, another gate and a pylon in
Frost!^^'s
natural, forge back at home then pylon (at home).
Post Midgame-
The first 3 zealots that where produced by Dref
where sent to attack Frost.
At about the same time Frost sends a small
band of 6 lings to attack Dref.
They meet up just above Dref's mineral only
where Frost loses 2 lings in a
quick skirmish then retreats the remaining to his cliff when a sunken is
about 60% done. Dref stops his band of 3 lots
and puts them on hold
position at the bottom of the ramp, now knowing about the sunken that is
rapidly nearing completion. Dref starts
warping in a cannon at Frost's
natural. About 10 seconds later the sunken completes and begins spiking
one of the zealots that are holding position at the bottom of the ramp.
It gets in another hit before Dref notices
this and pulls back his zealots.
Right as the zealot that has been hit three times almost gets out of range,
the sunken sends him back to Aiur.
Midgame-
After 2 cannons where made in the natural Dref
retreated his remaining
zealots back to his ramp, where a cybernetics core was added, then he began
to also harvest gas. Dref then sent a probe down
to the 9 base where he
warped in a pylon. Then a small assault squad of 6 lings and 2 hydras where
sent to try and maybe wreak some havoc at the growing protoss establishment.
A group of 5 zealots dealt with this fairly easily, and as this skirmish was
happening Dref's first two goons popped out and he
quickly dispatched of the overlord standing watch in his base.
Then another force from the zerg came and hit, this one containing 7 hydras
and 2 lings. 4 lots and 2 goons engaged the army. The zerg slowly tried to
fight its way into the protoss base, as a couple hydras and some lings would
trickle down from the zerg base to join the fray.
Frost
kept the forces
trickling in, but now with maybe 3 hydras at a time or so.
Dref eventually lost his
zealots and wasn't producing anymore at the moment, he kept producing goons
from his 3 gateways. He barely was holding onto his ramp, but his micro and
height advantage finally won him the battle.
Frost then proceeded to send a drone to the 9
natural where he started
morphing a hatchery, then proceeded to kill the 2 cannons and the pylon
in his natural. Shortly before the pylon in Frost's natural fell,
Dref
morphed in a nexus at the 9 main, which had 2 photon cannons standing guard.
Meanwhile, back at Frost's new expansion
(9 natural) he added a creep
colony, and a spire was about halfway done in Frost's
main. Dref started
maynarding 6 of his probes to the 9 base just as Frost
had the creep turned
into a sunken and began morphing 3 hydralisks there. An overlord in the
center of the map saw the probes marching in their congo-line type fashion
towards the 9 base. Then they got to the 9 natural, where the sunken had
just completed. It managed to kill one probe, then the hydralisks hatched
and killed another 2. The remaining 4 made it the new base, where the 3
hydras followed. Somewhere in this time frame a 2nd pylon, a gateway, and a
3rd cannon where added to the expansion. The cannons easily dealt with the
three hydras.
Post Endgame-
An army of 2 zealots, 8 dragoons and 2 high templar where quickly sent to
dispatch of the zerg expansion.
As the army quickly razed the zerg expansion, the zerg sent a counter force
to his the protoss main. First, 4 mutas and an overlord flew in and quickly
decimated a single photon cannon sitting by the peon line. At about this
time a small force of hydras hit the protoss front door, where 4 goons and
a templar stood century. As the goons took care of the hydralisks, the
mutalisks killed a couple probes. After dispatching the hydralisks with only
losing one goon, the other 3 quickly where sent to kill the mutas. The 3
mutas killed one goon before retreating, but they where gone for only a
moment before returning with 2 more of their fellow flying brethren. The 5
quickly killed the 2 goons, then headed towards the peon line. The single
templar mustered up his energy and released a psionic storm, where with a
crackling thunder the storm managed to completely miss all but one of the
mutas, and that muta was just barely harmed. The mutas then began kill
probes in large quantities. Then they faced another cannon, that managed
to kill one of them and they flew away from it, heading towards the ramp.
3 goons waited there and killed off another 2 of the mutas, leaving their
numbers down to 1. Then 8 lings sprinted up the ramp and engaged the goons.
One goon died and the other 2 tried dancing around while the protoss army
at the 9 natural could get back, or where some more goons could finish
morphing from Aiur. One goon and one templar popped out, and the ling
slowly losing their number continued slowly killing one goon at a time,
then the rest of the army came home, and quickly disposed of the threat.
The overlord was also quickly killed.
Now lets take a quick overlook that's happened so far in the game:
1st) Dref placed 2 cannons in Frost's
natural,
good for some kills and recon.
2nd) Frost kept applying pressure in the game early
on to Dref.
3rd) Both players expanded AWAY from their natural, and when Dref was
maynarding drones Frost and
Dref's expansions where revealed to one another.
4th) Dref sent a large army to destroy Frost's
expansion, while in return
Frost hit Dref's
base, killing most of the drones there.
So now Dref is just slowing getting ahead in econ,
seeing as how neither of
his bases are running at full capacity yet, but slowly his peons are
building up. Frost meanwhile is down to just
his main with a large amount
of drones harvesting gas and mining minerals.
Just before the zerglings where killed in Dref's
base, Frost had started
morphing 6 lurkers. He had noticed that the only detection that Dref
had
was cannons and those where only in the very heart of his main.
So the
lurkers ran up and spread themselves evenly out in front of the ramp so
that a single storm could only kill one at a time. At a time when 5 of
them where burrowed, Dref started sending his army out for an attack.
Noticing the subterranean spikes hitting his men, he quickly pulled them
back. Then Frost slowly began creeping the
lurkers up the ramp, and also
expanded to his natural. At one point he had 2 lurkers on the ramp, which
a storm easily dealt with. But the lurkers continued up, getting up onto
the cliff, being joined by a handful of hydras. After they had all entered
his base, goons began exploding pouring their goopy blue insides out. One
lurker made a b-line for the peons and made it. He quickly burrowed,
and began making the probes explode. The lurker managed to kill about
9 peons before a storm ended its life. Frost
then started expanding to
his mineral only. While the few remaining lurkers where holding Dref's
main at bay, Frost sent a small army of lings and
hydras to the protoss
expansion. With only 3 cannons and a small number of goons for defense,
the expansion was slowly being killed off.
End Game-
During the time that it took for the lurkers to contain Dref
and for his
expansion to be attack, Dref was teching for
observers.
When his expansion
was about 1/4 razed he began killing off the lurkers. The constant pumping
of dragoons from the single gateway at his expansion and the probes ended
the threat from the zerg forces. Dref
then sent the forces from his main base to the center of
the map. An army of 10 dragoons and 2 archons, who had discovered the
mineral only attempt via a wondering dragoon (I think) mercilessly
destroyed the hatchery and the couple drones mining.
Now the biggest battle of the game ensued. Dref
had his forces, which
consisted of 10 dragoons, 4 high templar, and 2 archons, gathered at
his mineral only.
He also had an observer sitting in the choke made by
the bottom-left side of Frost's
base and the right side of Dref's base,
watching for any movement. Then it came...
Frost!^^ had morphed a large army of zerglings
and hydralisk, accompanied
by a few speed upgraded overlords, barreling towards Drefsab's
expansion.
Unfortunately for Frost, Dref
picked the best time to attack these forces,
right in the middle. He sent his large army right into the line of
hydralings. After a few well placed storms, the majority of the army that
had hit into the fight or turned around to fight where massacred, with
Drefsab only losing one archon and 225 energy.
Then Dref immediately attacked Frost.
A
sunken on Frost's cliff, a sunken at his
natural and a lurker where
the only things standing guard. One storm later the lurker was dead, but
one hydralisk and 4 lings had joined into the fray. After disposing of them,
the army moved deeper into the natural, killing the single sunken there.
Frost began retreating his some of his drones
into his main, as freshly morphed
hydralisks joined into the battle. Soon the goons where dead, then
the archon, leaving only 3 templar. The 2 hydralisks that where left
began spitting out spines at one of the templar before their lives
where ended short with a crackling thunder. Then 2 of the templar
began morphing into an archon. 2 more hydralisks came and began firing
upon the morphing archon. Blue lightning began dancing on them and then
they turned into a bloody mess. The single archon managed to get 19
kills between drones and zerglings. Having no money left and no army,
Frost conceded the game.
Aftermath-
This was a very exciting game to watch. I thought zerg was gonna win early
on with Frost's quick succession of rushes, then I thought Drefsab would
win after killing Frost's expansion. After Frost came back and killed most
of Dref's probes, I didn't know who would win until the final battle. GG to
both players, and here are the scores:
