No Need For Detectors

I was used to the smell now. I remembered when I first dawned the Firebat suit, the overwhelming smell of propane nauseated me. That was roughly 2 years ago however. Some of the other bats put those cute little old fashioned Pine-Tree air fresheners in their H.U.D. Helms, but I didn’t even smell it anymore. I also know of a few bats who actually enjoy the smell…I think they have had one to many stim shots personally.

“Billy Hurry up! Keep ahead of the Marines!”

I was traveling with a group of 8 Marines, another bat, and a pair of Meds who where Identical Twins. Lillian and Rose.

“Why don’t we have a Science Vessel with us?” ask one of the marines, Mike.

“We are only taking down a Hatchery, 3.1” I responded casually…oblivious.

“B-B-But what if there are…Lurkers!” He seemed pretty paranoid.

“They just moved into the area, we haven’t even detected a Hydra yet” Command responded like the voice of God in our H.U.D.’s. Obviously they had been listening to our little conversation.

“See Mike, there is nothing to worry about, ill be ... I mean We’ll be fine” Erik and I chuckled as the 3.1 seemed a little agitated with my jest remark.

We continued forward and, in the distance, I could see the purple goo stretching around the corner of a valley. The ground started to rumble a bit beneath my feet. I jumped back expecting the worst. As I did so Zerglings started bursting up out of the soil around our position. The creature paused for a second to get the dirt out of its Eyes. This gave me that split second for the Propane to come from the fuel tank, hit the ignition and project out of the nozzle on either of my arms. The lings tough carapace delayed its demise long enough for it to leap and claw at me. Its claw slashed into my reinforced armor to make a light wound in my chest. The armor absorbed most of the damage but it did manage to piece my skin and knock me to the ground. I rolled to the side as another ling pounced at me, and a Quick burst of flame from the nozzle on my right arm sent that ling back to the hell that spawned it. I quickly returned to the full upright position and looked around for my next target finding but two ling remaining, and a few of the marines lightly injured.

Just then something zipped past my helm and lodge itself firmly into one of the marines chest protectors. Thomas fell to the ground like a rag-doll. I quickly spun around to see a pair of Hydra’s positioned on top of the cliff, sending their barbs of death™ in our general direction. I quickly assessed the situation and gave some orders “Erik, me and you will take down those last 2 lings, Marines! Those Hydra’s don’t have enough holes them, add some more!” Erik (the other bat) and I rushed at the two lings and we stopped as they rushed towards us. The both pounced at either of us and I ducked to the side lightning the ling up as it came down on my former position. Suffice to say that it was pretty crispy. Erik on the other hand wasn’t so lucky. Sure the ling was nice and well-done but it managed to insert one of its claws threw Erik’s person, I quesstimate it was somewhere in the cranial-area (For those who don’t know the Cranium is the head...or the skull…. Either way, same thing)

I ducked to the ground to make myself harder for the Hydra’s to hit, should they decided to fire at me over the Marines. They fired together at a single target, the first barb of death™ placing itself inside of Dave’s upper torso while the other found its residence in the upper portion of his spinal cord. He tumbled to the ground, his death grip on his Gauss rifle continued to fire the depleted Uranium rounds into the air at the gods who dealt him such a cruel fate. The remaining 3.1’s took shots of stim and in a few moments the Hydra’s vaguely resembled Swiss cheese. The twins rushed about, removing barbs of death ™, and regenerating damaged tissue. After the tissue regenerator worked its cancer causing magic on my minor chest wound, we pressed on.

As we approached the creep I noticed how the purplish goo was absorbing the grass and soil… maybe it used the absorbed nutrients to feed the larva and to power the buildings? I made a note to myself to ask one of those tech nerds that hang out in sci vessels. I remembered the Hydra presence as my adrenalin rush subsided.

“Command”

“Yes Marshal Doran?”

“We have confirmed kill of 2 Hydralisks, request Explorer incase of Lurkers.”

After a moment or to command responded…

“Sorry that is not possible, however the Comsat station is nearly completed, that will have to suffice.”

I cursed under my breath

“Looks like we are going in blind boys…and girls”

Mike seemed to have a problem with this…

“Command!” not bothering for a response… “You are going to get us all KILLED! I Refuse, copy that? REFUSE to attack the Hatchery with no way of seeing-“

And with that Mike fell over to the ground. Rose put away her tranquilizer shot and smiled slyly. “Sir, I believe that Private Senta was suffering from temporary Insanity”

“Confirmed Lieutenant”

“Command”

“Yes Marshal Doran?”

“I apologize for that last transmition, Field Medics have confirmed that Private Senta was suffering from temporary insanity and had to subdued.”

“Copy that Marshal Doran, proceed to the hatchery and exterminate it”

“Roger that Command, lets move out soldiers!”

The large pulsating building that was designated as a Hatchery was visible before us. “Alright boys, kill the drones and rip that hatchery down!” “Sir yes sir!” some of the Marines responded enthusiastically. We dashed towards the roughly 6 drones. The creep felt like foam…expanding and contracting under our boots as we ran across it. The 3.1’s had some target practice on the drones, and I barbequed a few myself. We then turned our fire to the Hatchery. When the building pulsated I thought it was alive, but when blood started to gush out…I knew it was alive…

The building didn’t last long to the U-238 rounds and the bursts of flame, and soon me and my platoon were covered with Zerg guts as the hatch exploded.

“Command”

“What is it Marshal?”

“Confirmed kill of the Zerg Hatchery in the northern area of the Delta sector”

“Copy that Marshal, good job, bring ‘em home”

“That’s a big 10-4 Command”

However it was not going to be that simple. A little clump of dirt splattered onto my HUD. I brushed it aside thinking “what the hell” as a scream pierced threw the silent atmosphere. I spun around (much like earlier when those Hydra’s capped off that marine) and to my horror saw one of the 3.1’s lifted into the air with a large spike like tentacle threw his body. Only one thing came to my and out of my vocal chords-

“LURKER!”

“COMMAND THERE IS A LURKER AT OUR POSTION, REQUESTING IMMIDIATE SCAN OF THE AREA”

“Roger that Marshal, scanning your position”

The location of the burrowed reaper appeared on my HUD.

“SOLDIERS OPEN FIRE!”

Only a few marines had control enough over their panic and fear to keep from running, and thus returned Fire. As I closed distance to the lurker another of the fleeing 3.1’s was hoisted into the air and thrown a good 20 feet by a spike-tentacle of death™. The Lurk took good damage from the Marines actually firing, and I finally reached its burrow. I kicked in the roof of its little hole open. It looked up at me and I bet those heat sensitive receptors blinded him as the Flames of Vengeance turned his hole into a make-shift grave…
