“All vessels, evasive maneuvers! We need to clear the cross fire before we get torn to pieces! Tell the Protoss we need their Arbiters to recall the fleet back to Aiur!”
Kerrigan and her fleet weaved their way through a maze of laser fire and scattered halo missiles. The board on Kerrigan’s vessel indicated that all decks were damaged or destroyed. Most of the large capital ships had taken a tremendous pounding as soon as the fighting started. Half of Kerrigan’s own fleet was destroyed or crippled; the other half was forced to limp its way through a field of debris and enemy fire. The Protoss fared a little better, thanks to the benefits of superior technology and the massive Arbiters that stood watch over the main fleet. Both fleets were preparing to retreat as the Dominion Armada tightened its grip on the retreating rebels.
From his capital ship, the Anathema, Raynor watched as the enemy fled before him. He could easily order for every ship to be decimated, but it felt wrong. This whole mission felt wrong. He could not believe that he was such a cold and calculating warlord, who could wipe out an entire fleet. He didn’t want to set traps and wait, he wanted to meet his adversary face to face. Sitting here behind a wall of ships wasn’t a battle. He should be a part of this engagement, not a spectator.
“Captain, bring our ship full ahead and target the nearest vessel.”
“I’m sorry sir, but I have orders not to allow you to engage enemy forces directly.”
“And whose orders are those?”
“The emperor’s sir.”
“In that case, radio the rebel fleets commander. It’s obvious they’re trapped and outgunned. I’m sure this Kerrigan will see her situation is hopeless, and she will surrender.”
“I’m sorry sir, but the emperor has ordered that the rebels are to be exterminated.”
“But those are not my orders. Radio the damn fleet.”
“I’m sorry sir, I can not allow that.”
“Maybe you didn’t hear me. Radio the fleet, or stand aside and I’ll do it myself.”
“Sir, do not make me have you escorted off the bridge.”
“Like hell you will, you are relieved of your command.”
“No sir, you are relieved of yours. Guards, escort the commander back to his quarters.”
Two armed guards rushed to Raynor’s side with weapons drawn. Raynor made no motion to resist and walked away with his escort. As soon as the bridge doors closed, Raynor saw that the hall was empty. He decided to play his hand and swung an elbow into the face of the guard to his right. The blow broke the guards nose and sent him crashing to the floor. His partner turned and received a knee to the stomach and a second knee to the face. Raynor grabbed the guards rifle and dropped both of his would be captors with a quick club to the head. He wasted no time and headed for the escape pod hanger.
“Attention, all hands. Retrieve Commander Raynor and make sure he does not escape this ship.”
Raynor arrived at the hanger with close to a dozen armed soldiers right behind him. He boarded the nearest pod and tried to gain access to the hanger door controls. Unfortunately, Raynor found that his access was denied and the small squad of guards sent after him was just moments away. Raynor crouched behind the pod and took aim at the entrance to the hanger. If he was lucky, he could take a few down as they rushed the doors. His scope trailed the narrow doorway, but veered to the side to see a wraith in the distance. The ship was down for repairs, but the missiles on its wings were still armed and operational. If the doors wouldn’t open, he could easily make a way out.
“This is squad leader to the bridge. We have Raynor trapped in the escape pod hanger, do you want him dead or alive?”
“The emperor wanted him alive, but if he won’t come quietly shoot him.”
“Understood, we are moving into the hanger.”
Raynor checked his controls and his pod was ready to fly. Not a moment had past after Raynor began the ignition sequence, that the first of the guards broke into the hanger. They spotted the pod as its engines began to charge and opened fire. The bullets slammed into the small ships hull and cracked the crafts glass visor. Raynor returned fire and a spray of bullets flew past the guards and straight into the missile hold of the wraith. The missiles and plane exploded sending debris and bodies flying across the room. The explosion carved a giant hole in the hull and the vacuum of space began to drag the survivors of the blast to an icy and cold death. Raynor closed the hatch to the pod and guided his small ship through the maelstrom of the vacuum. He emerged to the other side and watched as his former ship retreated in a crippled stagger.
“We have hull breaches on decks seven through eight! We are tilting to the starboard side!”
“Initiate emergency procedures and find out if Raynor is dead or if he’s escaped.”
Raynor now alone and floating through a battlefield, needed help. His ship was damaged and without rations. Without help, he would either explode or starve. He couldn’t turn to the Dominion, so he headed for Kerrigan and her trapped fleet.
“This is Kerrigan to the fleet, prepare to evacuate the area. All fighters pull back and regroup with the fleet. We only have one shot at this and you do not want to be left behind.”
“Kerrigan, this is Sage. We can not hold our position any longer, we must evacuate now.”
“The fighters are not back yet, we can’t abandon them.”
“If we do not leave now, there will not be a fleet left, let alone the fighter squadrons.”
“Very well, commence the evacuation.”
Kerrigan watched as the riffs in space consumed her vessels in an eerie blue haze. Through the temporal fog, she could see the fighters, terran and protoss, just beyond the reach of the riffs. They turned and in unison launch a final charge against the Dominion lines. The haze became thicker and the fighters disappeared before her eyes. She continued to look for them even as the fleets made a slow and lumbering retreat back to Aiur.
Back at Korhal, the officers of Raynor’s flagship stood before the emperor, who was very displeased that Kerrigan had escaped and Raynor was now dead or even worse with Kerrigan. Mengsk was furious, but he kept his temper in check as he questioned his generals on what had gone wrong.
“Explain to me, why Raynor was ordered to be captured on his own ship?”
“He wanted to allow Kerrigan to surrender. We believed that this might go against your majesties orders.”
“And what were my orders lieutenant?”
“That Kerrigan be disposed of at all cost. Her and her fleets were to be destroyed.”
“And Raynor would not have accomplished this if he had only captured the fleet?”
“Well you had ordered…”
“I know what I had ordered! I did not order for Kerrigan to escape and I know I did not order to have Raynor killed or captured! Now, Raynor is either dead or he is regaining his memory as we speak. If he does not receive a serum shot every three days, he will become the threat to me and my Dominion before his caopture.”
“We apologize emperor, it will not happen again.”
“That at least I can be assured of. Guards, take these pieces of trash from my sight. Make sure I never see them alive again.”
Pleas for mercy fell upon deaf ears as Mengsk exited to his war room. He and his generals would begin to execute the second phase of his plans to completely dominate the sector. Many of his top advisors felt as if Mengsk was playing with fire. In many respects, they were correct. Mengsk viewed the room and saw a sea of anxious and concerned generals. In the old days, Duke would have persuaded his generals from questioning his orders. Now, Duke was dead and it took more then a simple order to convince the generals that he was not insane. It seemed odd that an emperor should have to convince anyone to carry out orders. A lot had changed; everything had changed.
“Gentlemen, today I bring before you the next phase of this operation. Our forces have successfully found a way to breach the psi shield that the Protoss erected around Tarsonis to prevent the release of the zerg. Now we shall accomplish what both the UED and the Confederacy could not, wield the zerg with total control. .In the past both the Confederacy and the UED had attempted to control the zerg and in turn use them as the ultimate bio-weapon. They failed because they both did not respect the zerg nor did they truly have control. However, I have used their mistakes to my advantage and have created a device that can control the broods for Dominion use. I present to you, the Psi Channeler.”
Mengsk created a digital model of his creation on the viewscreen. It looked much like the Confederate Psi Disruptor, but it held a series of crystals placed on an antenna. They were curious of course, but as always they were skeptical to Mengsk’s plans. The emperor had a habit of creating plans that were nearly impossible to undertake. This was beginning to look like one of those fateful plans.
“The Psi Channeler uses the power of my emitters, but also combines the power of the Xel’ Naga Crystals. The zerg can be pointed in any direction we choose, and proceed to destroy anything in their path. The crystals will prevent them from turning on us.”
“But Emperor Mengsk, how can we be sure that this device is fool proof? What if the device does not control the zerg as you have anticipated?”
“I would assume that my word would be sufficient. However, if a test is required, I would be more than happy to oblige you.”
Mengsk removed a glove from his side and placed it on his hand. It was a regular glove issued to all generals, but on in the palm, was a white and radiant stone. Mengsk placed the stone to his temple and stood still and in silence. The generals questioned his actions, when the war room doors were kicked in. The generals turned to see two zerglings standing before them. They growled and began to snapped at the frightened commanders.
“Guards this is General Moda, we have a zerg attack in the war room. We require immediate assistance now!”
“On our way sir.”
“Guards delay that order, you are to not enter this room. Is that clear?”
“Understood.”
“Your insane, these zerg will kill us where we sit.”
“None of you will be harmed unless I will it. These zerg are under my control, thanks to the crystal embedded in this glove. Do you still doubt my control of these beasts, general?”
“No emperor. I can see that they are well under your control.”
“Good, you are relieved then, general.”
The general reached for his pistol, but the zerglings leaped forwards and killed the officer with a few quick stabs. After a few growls and a bite, the zerglings left with the spoils of the kill. Mengsk quickly sat down and gasped for air, as the rest of the generals fled for the nearest exit. Mengsk was able to compose himself and called a medic to see to his pounding head and bleeding nose.
On Aiur, Kerrigan assessed the condition of her fleets. All ships reported damage ranging from hull damage to complete system failure. Half of her manpower was dead or dying, with the other half injured. The Protoss losses were not as severe, but they could not afford another confrontation. This fleet was one of two remaining fleets of Protoss warships in the sector. Sage and Kerrigan met to discuss their next move. It was clear that the Dominion had breached Tarsonis, but it was unclear if Mengsk had a way of controlling the Broods.
“I can’t believe Raynor was leading that ambush. It could not be possible.”
“Perhaps This “Raynor” was some duplication?”
“A clone? I doubt it, Mengsk doesn’t have the tech to clone a terran.”
“If it was the real Raynor, what shall we do if we meet again?”
“I’m not sure, Jim would probably want us to stop him, but I can’t kill him. He’ still jimmy.”
“Your human compassion is most honorable, but if Raynor is allowed to lead Mengsk’s armies, I am not sure we could hold the tide.”
“With the fleets condition, we’re not in shape to fight a squadron, let alone an armada.”
“Even so, we shall meet our destiny with honor. The zerg must never be released and I would die to stop the Dominion and its emperor.”
“I’ll tell you what Sage, Jim and Zeratul would be proud of you.”
Sage was one of the few Protoss praetors to survive the carnage of the Hybrid Wars. With Zeratul and Artanis both dead, Sage took control of the shattered tribes and once again brought order to the chaos of Aiur. Sage hazd managed to united the Protoss and Dark Templar and once again formed a lasting bond between them. Under Sage, the Protoss had rebuilt Aiur and had placed the Psi Shield around Tarsonis. Sage was not ready to bring the Protoss into yet another war. Though he was prepared to fight, he had tried to keep the Protoss from a full fledge war. He had regretted not assisting Raynor in the Dominion Civil War and now hoped to prevent Mengsk from freeing the Broods trapped on Tarsonis.
“Your praise is premature kerrigan. I have not brought our forces victory yet. Only time will determine our fate.”
“Kerrigan, this is Captain Riggs, we have a prisoner you should come and see.”
“I’m on my way. We’ll finish our talk later.”
“As you wish, I will prepare my fleet for departure.”
Kerrigan headed for Riggs’ ship and saw a huge crowd of people gathered around the landing deck. She thought a fight had broken out and forced her way to the center of the pack. She saw two guards holding a prisoner with the others taking shots at his head and stomach.
“All right get off him. I want him alive. Move out.”
The sea of ship hands parted and she approached the prisoner. His head was down and she though he was dead. Then a familiar voice greeted her through a bloody and swollen lip.
“Howdy darlin’. You gonna kill me or what?”
