"Unfortunately, the evil Protoss military-industrial complex had so heavily polluted the SCV's normal migratory pathway with cannons that not one made it to the mating grounds." - FunnyMarx's Much Ado About Nuking.

For over six months now I have been playing Protoss only and have gotten to be quite good at using them. Yet, I just could not shake the feeling that yellow cheese and blue lightning just weren't for me. Last night I served the last of my cheese. From now on I will adapt my diet to include beer, malt liquor, and scotch. Yes, I will play Terran. I will master this race and share my journey through my battle reports. So are you ready? I can't hear you, are you RRRRREADY!?
Road to Excellence
Chapter 1: Saying Goodbye
Nohunters...zilch. x17...flame war. 1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1v1!!!!!!!!!!!NE1?????..zilch. Ah whatever, gona make a pubbie, at least I won't get my ass kicked too badly the first game. I make 1v1 TEMPLE EXPERT. I guess I was born under a lucky star for the first person that shows up is Machiaveilli (referred henceforth as Machi), a guy who I saw in x17 while trying desperately to find a game there.

I pick terran, he picks...toss. Well, this will be a symbolical farewell to my old allies. Kick ass and chew bubble gum! Let the games begin!!!
My command center lands at 9. I stick my head out and smell the air. Sssss.....aaaaah.... Smells good. Let's get to it.
Depot-8
Rax-11 (completes the wallin--gotta love the 9 o'clock)
Gas-13
Depot-15 (at the bottom of my mineral line)
Rax is done.
"Job complete, sir!"
"I want recon!"
"Sir! yes, sir!"
The SCV rolls down the ramp, just as a probe glides by. I order a marine. Those robots can be annoying. The barracks lights flash and the probe leaves. They are cowards.
Factory-18
The SCV finds nothing at 12 and proceeds to 3.
Rax-21 (that's right)
depot-22
The SCV approaches 3 ramp just as a goon is coming down. My scout shoots right past.
"Enemy sighted, sir! Taking fire!"
SCV dashes across the base with the dragoon close in pursuit. Right, left, but there is no escape. He did not die in vain. 1 Gate and robotics warping in. All that and just 1 goon with no range reserching. He's droppin'. Need to get ready.
I get a factory addon, going tanks, and start an ebay. I need to deny him the cheese, then he'll starve.
When ebay is complete, I make a turret below the Commnad Center and move a tank into the SCV line. When the turret is complete, I add a bunker between it and the CC, and put down another depot, continuing the defensive perimeter around my workers.
Bunker is done, and two rines hop in. I start an academy. Just as my siege mode research completes and I siege the tank by the CC, a shuttle flies in. Turret and bunker fire bring its armor into yellow before it manages to get out of rankge. He cirles around my base. I order the 4 rines that are not in the bunker to attack. The shuttle dodges one, but flies head long into another 3 that are coming down from my choke. Puff! It's gone. 1 goon made it out before the transport explodes, but 4 rines and a tank bring it down quickly with a loss of just 1 rine. No cheese here. But I think he likes apples.

My opponent told me that shuttle carried 2 goons. So I lost a rine--50 minerals, to his shuttle and 2 goons--450 minerals, 100 gas. I am ahead by 400 rock, time to expand.
"I want another base. Make it safe."
An SCV begins a Command Center at the top of my main plateau. The academy has finished. Curiosity may be a sin, but we aren't saints here.
"Comsat!!!"
"Yes, sir!"
I look around. This place is big.
"I need mobility!"
Another SCV starts a Starport. Click, click, I start infantry weapons and range reserch. A bit more beef, and my grunts will be eating goon soup.
Time to do some major macro. I lift my rax from the choke and order it to float next to the one in my main. If he wants to knock on my front door, let'im. I am making MMF and more tanks.
As my new CC is about to complete I send some workers down to make my natural a safe place. Turret/bunker/tank, gogogo.
A starport is done and my first wraith takes off.
"Patrol duty! I want regular updates!"
The wraith shoots off into the blue. If Toss epanded, we'll find them.
I maynard 12 peons over to my natural, start a refinery there, and begin adding rax and tech. Getting stim. I am already 1/0 and have range. Armor upgrade commencing. Adding second Ebay.
Suddenly my comlink comes alive. It's my wraith scout.
"Sir, Protoss activity at 12 natural. Pylon warp sighted."
Dam! Need to drop that, but I have no dropships. That's what I call sloppy.
"We're waking!"
He's taking 12 natural. If he secures that, he'll have too much gas later. Not gona let it happen! I send a marine to scout the way. If he has taken center, there will be blood.
My attention is diverted for a second when my scout wraith dies to 2 goons over his natural cliff. Guess that mean he's expanded there. Definitely not gona let him have 12. My scout gets to the 12 choke safely. Come on you maggots! You gona live forever!
2 tanks, 2 bats, 4 rines, 3 medics, and the scout rine waiting on site. Gona siege him from 12 main. Gona siege him REAL good. Infantry holds the ramp while tanks blow up the nexus. They will die, but they will do the job.
At home 4th and 5th rax are coming on-line. 2nd Ebay doing level 2 weapons, SciFac with covert ops. If you don't know I'm going deep6 by now, your live in Guam.
My troops make it to 12 main. Tanks roll up to the edge, ready to seige... WTF!?!? There are no probes. I scan. WTF!?!? There is no nexus. Machi must have cancelled the expo when he saw a wraith fly overhead. Grrrrr!

Suddenly I see blurr over my troops. Scan! Nailed an observer. How you like apples now!?
But we've been discovered.
"Brace for attack!"
A shuttle flies in. Reaver! my tanks are unseiged and a distance away. If I siege them, my infantry is gona get it. Stim!
"Yeah! That's the stuff!"
Gogogo. They split 1 and 3. The single eats a scarab, the rest get the reaver into red. Tank pops one right into robot's side. Machi loads the damaged slug into a shuttle. Stim!
"Yeah! That's the stuff!"
They bring down the shuttle. Wham! Heh heh.

Gona occuopy this place. If I have it, it means he doesn't. I send two SCVs to 12, and make turrets/bunkers at entrance and siege tanks behind that. If he wants to come that way, he'll have to pay.
Meanwhile at home I am reserching ghost cloak and pumping MMF/ghost/tank. My Ebays are cranking overtime. Almost got 2/1. I've added a nuke silo at my natural. Two dropships are standing by. No more climbing the tree to get the apples.
I keep scanning the map and discover Machi's expansion at 6 mineral only defended by 4 canons. No probes yet. Can't let him use it. I load up 3 dropships. 3 tanks, 11 M&M, and an SCV. Gona drop at 6 main and shoot him up from higher groud. Then if I can, I'll take 6 too. No easy cash for toss.
The drop goes well. My tanks siege and start hammerig on his nexus. That when Machi hit. My two front tanks get blown to shards (I placed them there, planning to take my mineral only). A control group and a half of 2/0/1 goons, 4 zealots and 2 temps pour into my natural. My forces are spread throughout the map. A squad is holding 12. A strike force at 6, assaulting his expansion. After the front tanks go, all I have left in to defend are 2 tanks, a bunker/turret, a control group of MMF, and some ghosts with no lockdown. This will be bloody.

The tank on my ridge goes. He keeps pushing in. My infantry runs down the ramp and engages the Protoss. They vaporize a templar that is going for my SCV line at the expansion and go for the goons. The tank and the bunker are doing their share as well. A few goons fall, but my infantry is dying quick. I only have 3 rines and a medic left after just 3 goons spill their goo. I order my men to pull back. The goons follow. Two more goons are brought down before my bunker explodes. The infantry rush out, but are torn apart by plasma fire. The retreating three rines meet their end as well. He still has 8 dragoons left and a templar. Protoss close in on the one remaining tank. A few anti-matter bolts, and the tank is gone. I have no more troops in main to defend with. This is not good.
The goons start massacring my SCV, and three more 4-legged walkers show up to reinforce. And he still has a templar left. I need all the help I can get. I order the tanks attacking the 6 o'clock back into the dropships and fly them back to base. He will not break through! The 4 ghosts on my cliff start taking desperate shots at the invaders, as the goons move into my mineral line. It will be close.
The dropships bring 3 tanks back home. At the same time another squad of infantry is ready, coming out of my barracks. They will carry the day. I run the SCVs and start making a new command center at the bottom of my ramp in case the one at the natural does not survive.
A tank fresh out of the factory sieges on my cliff and about 8 MM head down the ramp to fight the goons. Tanks pulls out the shock canons and start taking pot shots at the toss while the rines engage them below. Storm. 4 rines and a medic meet their end. They fought well. The remaining two rines bring the number of goons down to 4 before being taken out. The expansion CC hit point approach the point of no return.
Another tank rolls out of the factory and down the ramp. Sieges up, and the last of the goons are taken out. The command center survives with 58 hit points remaining. I did not even have to use the tanks that Ibrought back from the expansion raid.
NOW REBUILD!
I order the defenses to be reconstructed at the natural, cue up a bunch of units from the rax, start some upgrades, and survey the situation. I lost a fair amount of SCVs and some defense at the expansion. All in all, we broke about even. 4 tanks and 24 infantry units at most, with about 10 SCVs to his 21 goons, 4 zealots, and 2 temps. I did make a mistake though. I should have left the strike team of tanks where they were and killed his expansion. The nexus survived with 137 hit point remaining, and I never used those tanks for defense anyway. Woulda made my life hella lot easier if that expansion was gone. Ah whatevever, I'll get it later. (Actually at first I was going to use the infantry that I left at 6 when I picked up the tanks, but all I saw were 3 medics at 6 natural. It appers the marines ran into the expansion after the tanks left and were destroyed by the canons there.
I keep pumping troops and add a second factory.
6 rax pumping infantry and 1 factory of tanks is a lot of troops. Shortly after the toss attack I have 4 tanks and good 2 countrol groups of MMF.
"On the move !"
My new army moves out, heading for 6 natural. Nexus is our target. Gona finish that sucker along with the canons! My rines are 2/2, my natural is working full swing and has a bunker to protect it. I'm back in business.
My army reaches the middle in no time. I order the tanks in front and start rebuilding my nuke silo.
"Sir, we've got incoming!"
4 carriers release their swarm of interceptors.
"Stand your ground!"
Perhaps this IS a good day to die! The tanks siege, the rines stim... the carriers retreat. They must have not been fully loaded for I saw no more than 12 interceptors in the air.
"The enemy is retreating, sir!"
"Don't let them get away! Double time soldier!"
"Sir! Yes, sir!"

The rines run after the fleeing behemoths. The carriers turn around, target and destory one of the tanks. and then retreat gain behind the cover of the canons. Carrier/canon...not a pleasant thing for infantry. A few of the rines tha followed the fleeing battle ships found that out the hard way.
But I am not worried. I got the Terrans' greatest aly on my side--ghosts. I que up 6 of them in the barracks. CRAP! I still don't have lockdown! I deserve to loose just for that. I started the research. I am ready to defend unti then.
Just as I settle in the middle, a large group of goons attacks my forces form the north. I have one tank sieged there, but its marine support is on the other side, and goons quickly finish it off. Whatever. We'll fight hand to hand if we have to.
I got two tanks sieged behind oneof the temple walls, and I got reinfocements coming from main. Some MMF and 2 tanks. We've done it before, we'll do it again. I will reject the cheese and not give him any apples.
The rines in the middle die without medic of tank support, and the goons march on. I siege the 2 reinfocing tanks and teach the goons some respect. They back off.
In a second though they regroup and attack again, this time with carriers coming from the north as well. My push is going to die. I accpeted it.
The tanks go, and I order the remaining medics and a few ghosts and rines back to base. We will make our stand there.
The 5 remaining goons out of the force of 12 don't attack, but the carriers start hitting my outlying depots. Lockdown, almost done, 8 ghosts charging up. Rine qued up in the barracks.
Carriers fisnish off 3 depots and move on to my second factory. I have 12 rines and 7 ghosts statoned there. As the carriers attack the factory, the infantry begins shooting down interceptors.
"Yeah! That's the stuff!"
Lockdown research completes, and energy on one of the ghosts hits the mgic 100.
"Lock'm down!"
"Yes sir!"
A lockdown canister flies through the air and hit one of the carriers. We got'em. The other 3 carriers flee.
"Move out!"
The rines stim and go for the carrier and blow the yellow hot dog out of the sky.

The remaining carriers attemp, a comeback, but rethink their decision as my pissed off rines blow a few more interceptors out of the sky.
I am feeling the flow now. I got my lockdown army standing by. My rax are pumping, and his carriers are out of interceptors. Tastes good.
At this point I relized that I still controlled the 12 main plateau and began a command center there. No way he was gona take me down now.
I scan his island. Nothing. I got about 40 units of mixed infantry standing by and some tanks. Time to move out again. I'm mobilizing my army. Time to put the foot down on his 6 o'clock and squish it like a sand castle.
My troops take the center. I siege a tank and have my infantry standing by ready for action.
I order an SCV to make a turret in the center next to my tank and order an attack on the 6 mineral only. Time the bring down the hammer and shatter the crystal ball on the top of his nexus.
"Yeah! That's the stuff!"
I pour waves of 2/3 infantry at his expansion. He defends with a few goons and 2 canons. I lock on goons down and proceed to roll over his expansion.

At the same time 5 carriers hit the bottom of my main. No problem--I got 3 ghosts standing by charged up for lock down and 8 rines hanging around the barracks. What more do you need to counter carriers!?

Two ghosts lock down 3 carriers, the remaining two hotdogs stick around, but can't do much, as the incoming marine/ghost force shoots down their interceptors and takes out the 3 locked down carriers.
My natural runs dry, but I have started mining 12 o'clock main, and also floated the emergancy command center (the one I made during his goon push to replace my natural one, but never got to use) to my mineral only, and have begun mining there full swing. Should have done it earlier, but whatever. I make a barracks at 12 and pump out a few ghosts in case he decides to hit there.
Machi control his natural, where he still has some resources and his mineral only that he had taken during his first carrier attack. I scan the island--nothing. If I keep him where he is, I've got the game. I am 2/3 now and victory is withing my grasp. Caution is necessary however since he fortified his mineral only with canons, goons zealots, and 4 templars. He's gona hold on tight to his real estate there.
No problem. I got bunkers and turrets set up in the middle. We skirmish a little with him bringing out his emergency dark templar and doing a few PSI raids on my troops in the middle. No big deal. I got him cost for cost. I tried to nuke him a few times, but he saturated the area with observers and got my agent every time. At one point he send in a strike force of 12 speed zealots at my blocked in the middle, but my infantry fights them off without breaking a sweat.
Silence. Preparation is complete on both sides. There will be 1 more battle. Just one. And I am gona take it to him.
I EMP the two templars guarding the expansion and move in the infantry. Many of are going to die this day.
A templat storms. I must have missed one with the EMP. The storm nails 5-6 of my guys, but the rest press on. I raze the canons and the nexus by the time his army arrives. Over a control group of dragoons and 4 carriers vs a crapload of infantry.
"You know what to do men!"
"Lock'n down!"
My ghosts lock down some goons, then mange to circle around the wall of rines and lock down all 4 carriers. By then however, most of the rines are dead, and the reinforcements from main are still on their way...
"Fall back to the bunkers!!"
"Sir!"
The remaning forces retreat to the middle. Dragoons pursue. In the middle my battered infantry meets up with the fresh reinforcement squad from the base. Goons run head long into my new force.
"Yeah! That's the stuff!"
"Lock'n down!"
Ghosts fire lockdown, rines fire lead, and goon soup spills on the ground.
But no malt liquor just yet. 4 Carriers, having recovered from lockdown, float out of the shroud. The 4 ships engage my infantry, but to no avail. We got'em this time. As the last of them goes down, Machi gives gg. GG. We talk for a few minutes while he tries to spend the 1000 minerals that he had left in bank.

Then we pulled out the alcohol. There was this one rine who said he did not drink.
"Sir, I don't drink, sir"
"No problem soldier. I respect your opinion. Here have some scotch! It's aa... non alcoholic scotch..."
Comments/Lessons:
-Deep6 is a viable way to go. This was just my fourth game playing terran since playing all toss for months and the strategy served me well. People saying that carriers/temps/generally toss own infantry is no true. Machi used temps, reaver, Carriers, zealots and goons. All those units cost significantly more than my infantry, yet we ended up with about 1:1 kill ratio. Infantry is cost effective.
-I need to make sure that I keep producing units. When he attacked me with goons, I had nearly 3000 in bank. That's 60 marines right there. 18 goons and 2 temps vs 60 MM alone, would get owned badly.
-I need to make sure that I use a resource node that I have secured. My force at 12 allowed me to take that expansion easily. If he decided to attack, the choke defense would have held him long enough for my reinforcements to arrive. If I had made lockdown ghosts there sooner and walled in, nothing short of a full-scale assault could have taken it out. Also I made the extra CC during the goon attack. I should have used it at my mineral only right away.
-Fully upgraded ghosts are key to victory. I researched lockdown WAY too late. I could have had it for his goons attack easily. 4 ghosts on ridge firing lock down shells, you got minus 8 goons right there. Also in this section are the nuking techniques. I needed to find a way to nuke him. Granted he was not spread out, so it was easier for him to defend vs a nuke, but still, there were way to get around it. 1 good nuke could ahve won me that game much sooner. Also I should use nuke ASAP. Expo, SciFac, CovOps, Silo, cloak, nuke, gogogo. Toss is just not ready for a nuke this early, unless he expects it.
-Expansion should be defended by dual turret/bunker/tank. Huge benefit with pretty small investment. Maybe 1 bunker, but definitely 2 tanks.
-I should not have abanadoned my initial drop on his 6 o'clock. Those units did not help, but leaving them there, would have allowed me to proceed straight to his naturals after the first carrier attack. Much easier game.
-The goal of Deep6 is to deny toss his expansions, and most importantly deny him gas. I did it this game. We collected equal amount of resources (the scores say I got more, but that was because we talked for some time at the end of the game when I was mining and he was not). I denied him gas, and thus he could not get all the tech he wanted. He picked between carriers and temps. Did not have both, did not outreource me. That is that key.
-Also I plan on using many more tanks in the future. At least 2 factories cranking non-stop. That way I can do very strong pushes with infantry support.
-All in all, I need to fine-tune my terran. I will use metal, and I will use other strats, but the bottom line is I need to get the feel for playing terran...but that will come with practice.
Hope you enjoyed reading this. There will be more coming as I continue my journey on the road to excellence. |
