Heartcutter: 6:00 Terran
Honger: 9:00 Zerg
I'm quite familiar with zerg tactics, and this game was no exception. I was scouted early by an overlord, and this forced me into my 9rax build order. Expecting an influx of zerglings, I rallied into my peon line with my first few marines.
He didn't early attack.
I called up Deon, and he made a beeline to the enemy camp to see what was up. He brought back recon that an early exp at his natural was on the way. Unfortunately, Deon bit it this mission when a sunken cooked him at the opponent main.
Being in a period of mourning, grief and sorrow, I demanded vengeance. I ordered my first 6 pallbearers to go and kill that expansion. It just finished when they arrived. My marines, consumed by grief, remembered Deon by mauling the expansion. Private Taylor remarked 'Deon, you was one of my homies. I will mourn you until I join you.'
With that, he proceeded to pour a 40oz bottle of Old English malt liquor onto the spot of the now defunct expansion.
Once the deed was done, I recalled the marine group, as the danger of zerg retaliation was fairly high.
I proceeded to get the usual stim, medics, infantry upgrades and the expansion at the gimmie. I also scanned frequently at the zerg main. He was going for lurkers and plenty of hydras.
So into my library I went and got my journal...
Heartcutter book of Zerg, chapter 3: What to do in case of mass hydras:
Build marines and secure your gains properly with tanks and bunkers. Crush any expansion attempts and eventually get to 3/3 marines with sci vessels and cash in his chips.
So that's what I did. By the book. I secured my main with a tank, bunker, turret. My standard base architecture forced any drop to land inside the ring of depots, facing fire from the bunker, turret and tank. It's quite nasty.
Land outside, and expect the tank to anhilate you. It's just the way it's done.
I also had a fairly large amount of minerals after my expansion came online, and had to jam on the m key to build marines, built a factory and a pair of new CC's. I was kind of peeved that I still had minerals in the bank. Chapter 1 of the book specifically states: Be as close to 0 minerals at all times as you can. The only exception is when you need the 400 minerals to build a new exp.
So as I had my expansion en route to the island and the one at my 2nd natural, he drops.
And dropped well. I must say that it was a might unpleasant. The hydras ate the brunt of the machinegun fire, giving time for the lurkers to burrow. And at that point I was slacking. My rax weren't producing continuously, as it specifically states in Rule #2.
Talk about blowing it. Actually, I blame a lot of it on taking all the screenshots. So, gentle reader, I blame YOU!
I'd have to rate it as a successful drop. He did it well and it cost me too many marines in my opinion to fend it off. But once the ugliness was done, I resumed production and got going once again.
As I did my usual scanner sweeps, I noticed a new hatchery in the upper left corner. Cool! Something to hit! With a dropship filled with 4 meds and 4 marines (sloppy yet again. The best cargo is 6 marines and 2 meds), I went up and performed a picture perfect drop. Killed the expansion and denied him the resources.
But he wasn't done yet. Once again he drops into my main, and silly me, I didn't rebuild the bunker, turret and tanks. So he lands in my courtyard with approximately 16 hydras and I'm forced to bring guys from my choke to deal with it. No lurkers are present this time, and the marines with the medic support prove to be sufficient. I don't, however, like the amount of terran blood that's been lost this game. First Deon, then most of my other SCVs at my main. The bunker guys Herb, George, John and Vinne. And good ol' Bork, the tank commander. Poor Bork.
The timer, however is still ticking toward chapter 3's conclusion, but the zerg has one last gasp. He forces his way through the 10 marines and 3 medics at his natural, hell bent for leather. As he moves forward, he engages the turret, bunker and tank at my second natural. But we're all pissed off now! I've got marines, tanks and sci vessels. He hits the wall.
The rest of the game is just mop up. With 5 rax of 3/3 marines continuosly pumping, it was just a matter of time. He expanded again to 3:00, but I quickly crushed it.
Once I had my 20 marines and medics, I sent my SCI ahead and irradiated the 3 defending lurkers. This is for Bork!
So after the last one popped, I rolled in. He had no prayer. And I know, somewhere up there, Deon is happy.
Notes:
-Screenshots are a pain in the ass
-Look at the pictures closely to see what the proper defensive setup at your main should be.
-Your recon should determine how you should proceed, instead of a rigid build order.
-Don't just read the book of Heartcutter. Practice it.
| | Battle Shots! | I had the chance to set him back, and I took it.
His drop was a success. It was expensive on both our sides as well.
You notice that the Rax are quiet. That is a very bad thing. Shame on me.
This is at my second natural. Here he hit the wall.
Chapter 3 in practice. To you zerg players, there is a way to fight against it. But I'm not going to tell you how. Lets just say it takes a modicum of skill...
