started a public game, hoping to catch a poor newbie off-guard. As this was not the most honorable of intentions, Shiroman picked this moment in time to log on to -Flathead-'s game. -Flathead- looked sideways at Shiro, but did not mention that he knew him, knowing all-too-well this would not be the easy task that he thought it might be at the start...
The game on River Styx commenced!! -Flathead-, getting Protoss and starting in the upper base, opted to go with a 2 gate opening and went with early zealots. Shiroman, getting Terran at the bottom start point, went with an early barracks and bunker, and began the transition to factory units.
As normal, -Flathead- sent 3 zealots to the enemy base to see if there was any damage to be done. Seeing the bunker half-walled in, he retreated the zealots just as the shields of one of them took a small scratch. No damage done, better not to throw away units. Seeing the bunker, -Flathead- que'd up more zealots and started on gas and a cyber core, and sent a probe to the gimme expansion to get another nexus started up.
The next action happened on the doorstep of the Terran main base, when Shiro sent out 2 vultures and 4 or 5 marines for a little scouting run. The zealots killed one vulture, and a couple of dragoons stationed fired at, then retreated away from the marines. As -Flathead-'s attention was diverted, Shiro managed to draw a few zealots into the base to take fire, and those troops were valiantly lost whilst their leader payed no attention. Deciding not to lose more troops and seeing no advantage at this point, -Flathead- retreated back to base, qued up some more probes, dragoons, and started a 4th gateway and a citadel.
As 6 or 7 dragoons built up, they went on attack and found an assorted group of tanks and marines looking for trouble. Since they were too near to the protoss main, these troops were lost to the faster, stronger dragoon+zealot forces, who proptly decided to retaliate with the entire army.
A vicious battle ensued at the Terran base resulting in the loss of many dragoons, and quite a few Terran troops as well. Alas, the interior bunker and one tank remained when the smoke cleared, resulting in slightly worse losses for the Protoss troops.
It then went quiet for a few moments as nobody had any more troops. -Flathead- erected two more gateways bringing the total to 6, and had managed templar w/storm, and reaver tech. -Flathead- decided that a templar push w/dragoons would be fun. Placing a reaver in the back of the base for defense, he prepared to send 12 dragoons and 3 templars out for some action. That was when 6 or 7 goliaths romped into the town, with a couple of vultures added to it. This force ended up decimating the entire dragoon force before the reaver FINALLY creeped forward, and eliminated the 4 leftover goliaths without a scratch to its shields.
*Then*, in a move that stalled -Flathead- and made him think twice, possibly losing him the game, Shiro brought in 2 or 3 cloaked wraiths and started hammering on the (observerless and cannonless) protoss main. An observatory went up at -Flathead-'s gimme expansion, and a couple of cannons started warping at each base. The lack of mobile detection threw -Flathead- off so bad that he blundered and lost a shuttle w/2 reavers, and two templars (fully charged) to an approaching group of goliaths before they even got a chance to inflict ANY damage. This was a cruel blow, as it left -Flathead- with 3 dragoons, 2 templars, and a couple of cannons at each base.
After this, the constant pressure from the Terran was on!! Even with dragoons, templars, and reavers qued up and constantly producing from 6 gates and one rob facility, -Flathead- was unable to come back from the constant pressure laid on him by Shiro's forces. GG's were exchanged and a couple of musings were thought of:
1) -Flathead- should have built two cannons at each base much earlier in the game. This would have made it so he could have avoided feeling "out of sorts" when the cloaked wraiths came.
2) Shiroman could have built more tanks early to possibly win the game. With -Flathead-'s recon ability, tank pushes usually will not work, but more tanks would have been a larger problem for the (all ground) army of -Flathead-
3) Reavers kick the hell outta goliaths, but dragoons DO NOT. Psi-storm helps against golgies, but not as much as it does against M+M's. Trust good old -Flathead- on this one, boys...
4) -Flathead- is still not too good at micromanagement. Give him a pair of reavers and a shuttle or a couple of templari, and he'll find a way to get them killed without ever using them.
GG Shiroman!
