"Warning: There are two types of people reading this report. The first kind is already off staring blankly at my pretty pictures. The second are the ones reading this warning because none of the pictures are loading. The reason for this is one of the following: Bill Gates is the devil; Netscape Navigator was programmed by a bunch of monkeys; a butterfly flapped its wings in Hong Kong (or one of its near by suburbs); you are actually trying to download this through a phone line (be serious people); or Bill Gates is the devil."

When I saw this matchup in the nohunters channel, I knew it was gonna need a battle report.

The Map: Lost *grumble grumble* Temple. Play something else!!!

The Players:

In this corner...
Fractal_Wave, randomed to Orange Zerg, 3:00 start.

And over here...
Whoop(TerranFlavor), randomed to Blue Terran, 9:00 start.

Hold onto your hats...

Whoop started with the oddest build order I have EVER seen. SCV #8 constructed a depot first, then Whoop opted for a Refinery before his Barracks, then a Depot, followed by a factory. He followed with another Barracks much later.

Fractal_Wave began with a spawning pool, then a second hatchery, an extractor, a hydra den, and then began his lair upgrade. He sent his overlord to the 12:00 start position for a look-see.

Seeing that his opponent wasn't camped out in the north, Fractal sent his first six zerglings slavering to the south. Had he sent these to Whoop's 9:00 location, he would have run into the only two marines Whoop had produced, that were standing around the ramp (no, not drinking malt liquor! I refuse to use that reference!). As it stood, 9:00 was the next destination in store for the zerglings. They zipped up the ramp into three of Whoop's marines.

Whoop quickly backed his marines away, drawing them into his main base. His building position was excellent, as depots, barracks, and factory made a 'circle the wagons' cofiguration around Whoop's base. The zerglings tried to squeeze through the cracks and were cut to little zergling bits.

12 more zerglings loped out of Fractal's base and streamed up Whoop's ramp. Not wanting to risk assaulting Whoop's well-designed encampment, Fractal researches burrow and buries his zerglings at the top of Whoop's ramp. Simultaneously, he expands to his natural while producing hydralisks to defend against a strike from the Whoopster.

Whoop is teching like a fiend. Since his early factory, he has added a starport, a science facility, a covert-ops center, and a nuclear silo to his command center. At this point he also remembers an academy (how do you forget that?). Two tanks, a pack of marines, and a science vessel roll out in quick succession. Whoop constructs a bunker in his inner defense line, an engineering bay, and moves out to attack.

Well, Whoop naturally departs his base by using the ramp. Remember what was burrowed at the ramp? That's right, Fractal pops up his twelve zerglings that spring at Whoop's attack force with blood-curdling howls. Unfortunately, blood-curdling howls and tiny little claws are easily squished by rolling, unsieged tanks, and a bunch of marines. Oops. The lurkers that Fractal was sending to reinforce quickly turned around and scuttled back to safety.
Whoop uses the respite to expand to his natural, setting up a comsat station on that command center.

Whoop sends a lone marine to patrol the 12:00 and 6:00 start locations, and moves to push Fractal's natural. His forces total a squad of marines, two damaged tanks, a science vessel, and one ghost. Fractal, alerted to the attack by his zergling fiasco, burrows his lurkers at the choke point to his natural expansion and sends out the huge mob of hydras he's been powering out.

It's not pretty. The marines have neither medic nor stim, and Whoop's tanks siege late and well inside hydra range. A defensive matrix around Whoop's last tank proves futile and even the science vessel is run down and blown out of the sky.

The ghost has cloaked and watched indifferently as his mates were ground into hydra chow. Now he sneaks past the slavering horde with mass destruction on his mind. He saunters casually into the natural expansion and is promptly ripped apart by the three lurkers Fractal had burrowed there earlier. Betcha thought Whoop was gonna nuke, huh? (:

Fractal pushes for immediate retaliation and sends his hydras into the Terran's den. They are met at the entrance to Whoop's natural expansion by a wave of marines, medics, and a pair of siege tanks from the cliff at the top of Whoop's ramp. It's not pretty. The hydras are blasted into hydra soup and quickly disappear.

Whoop now has something like five barracks and is training obscene numbers of marines. His natural expansion is guarded by at least two squads with medic support. Fractal decides that he needs to expand again, and loads up a few drones into a transport overlord and heads toward the island at the bottom-right. On the way, the overlord deposits a lurker at the cliff above his natural expansion. Looks like he wants to prevent a little turbo-newbie action.

Fractal creates a spire and decides it's time for a tactics switch. He loads up four overlords with hydralisks and sends them floating on a mission of doom to the barren southeast side of Whoop's main base. At nearly the same time, Whoop loads a pair of dropships with a strike force and sends them out as well.

The overlords dump their cargo of hydralisks directly on top of a very surprised looking SCV that was constructing a command center to float. The slithering hydras lay into Whoop's base, taking out a machine shop and a barracks when Whoop moves his large mob of medics and marines from his natural to intercede. Two tanks siege just outside hydra range and...

"Ah yeah, that's the stuff." - Mark4, on Jack Daniels/Whoop's marines, on stimpack.

The hydras burst like a string of firecrackers and the assault is ended. Whoop rebuilds what he's lost and continues his ridiculous marine production.

Meanwhile, the two dropships Whoop has sent out unload on the island expansion Fractal has created. The creep colonies that Fractal morphed had yet to be converted into defensive structures and in a very short time, where once there was an expansion there was an expansion no more. Three mutalisks, sent to intercede, turn around and run away at the sight of Whoop's marines. Whoop picks up his two tanks, five marines, and two medics and lifts off again, leaving one marine to keep vigil over the island. As far as I know, he's still there, long after the game ended, happy as a clam with a deck of cards and a pup tent.

Whoop's dropship force is joined by another shipfull of M&Ms and a science vessel. The convoy sets a course for the cliff above Fractal's natural and Whoop wisely orders a comsat scan before landing. He lands outside the range of the detected lurker and takes it out before setting up his two tanks to rain cannon shells and terror from the cliff above. Fractal's air-delivered lurkers fail to quell the threat and the expansion is pounded into a mass of goo.

Fractal is down to his depleted main and is pressed to the wall. Gambling that Whoop has overextended, he sends six full overlords to the same spot in Whoop's base that he had hit before. Three mutalisks run interference and the swarm sweeps into Whoop's base.

It turns out that Whoop didn't overextend. Two squads of marines with medics, siege tanks, and science vessels troop up the ramp and form a firing squad. Stimpack, machine guns, little bits of hydras flying everywhere. The assault is finally turned back at the cost of four barracks, a factory, and a burning nuclear silo.

Fractal has used his massive assault as cover to expand to the 12:00 start location, but Whoop's patroling marine spots the creep blanket. Whoop controls a huge wave of M&Ms that march brazenly up the ramp and burn down the small defense force of zerglings and hydralisks. Desperate, Fractal sends three more mutalisks from his main base out to the 6:00 expansion where Whoop has an idle command center.

Whoop refrains from pushing into Fractal's last source of money and instead orders a ghost to drop a nuke. Fractal hears the alarm and suicides his drones at the ghost. Needless to say, with two medics standing ready and fifteen marines within firing range, the drones were unable to prevent the nuclear destruction of half of the zerg expansion. Whoop orders his marines to clean up the other half before moving his army of doom to deal with Fractal's main base.

Meanwhile, the mutalisks have burned Whoop's idle command center to the ground and have moved to the undefended south side of Whoop's base. They are unable to destroy the engineering bay before it finishes 3/3 upgrades to Whoop's marines. They are also unable to distract Whoop's attention and a battalion-strength force of marines marches up the ramp to Fractal's main base.

Fractal unburrows a drone he had hidden at the 12:00 natural and begins a hatchery there in a last-ditch attempt to respond. In a move that had the spectators rolling with laughter, Whoop's ghost spots a nuke on the morphing hatchery. Fractal hears the call, sees the targeting dot, and cancels the hatchery. As the nuke begins to fall, Fractal orders his drone to 'duck and cover' and the poor little guy burrows right underneath the nuke. Boom. Drat.

Whoop's army of darkness, supported by science vessels and medics, burns through the remainder of Fractal's base and the game ends.

Lessons Learned:

- After seeing two games of Zerg/Terran on Lost Temple, I've gotta say that mass hydras really aren't the answer. The Terrans have a lot of cost-effective hydralisk-slaughtering weapons.

- Whoop's recon ruled. Fractal had good recon, but it didn't matter much; Whoop only needed two bases.

- Fractal went down fighting. When hit, he hit back with drops. Me likey.

- Whoop's tech jump to nukes MAY have gotten him killed, but in this case the gamble paid off with ridiculously early science vessels.

Battle Shots!

Oops. That tank looks awfully lonely now.

Fractal's hydra assault strikes Whoop's underdefended flank.

Death from above.

That's right, kiddies. Duck, and cover.
